Indonesia is the country with the world's largest Muslim population – and nowhere do you experience that more vividly than on Lombok. This island, located next to the famous Bali, has a predominantly Islamic Sasak population with centuries-old traditions, impressive mosques and warm hospitality. During this 14-day group trip we explore the best of two islands: culturally rich Bali with its sacred springs, temple complexes and green rice terraces, and authentic Lombok with its mosque routes, eco-villages and the beloved Gili Islands. A journey that seamlessly combines rest, culture and adventure – crafted especially for Muslim travellers.
The itinerary
Today the group departs from Amsterdam (or other departure point) to Bali, Indonesia. Your travel guide will inform you about flight times and the program ahead.
Upon arrival at Ngurah Rai International Airport, you will be met by your driver. Transfer to the hotel in Kuta. Take the rest of the day to recover from the journey and explore the surroundings. Kuta is a vibrant beach resort with wide beaches, shops and a lively atmosphere.
Transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Lombok. On the way to your hotel in Kuta Lombok, you'll stop at Al-Faradis Mosque and Agung Praya Mosque – two beautiful places of worship in the heart of Lombok. Check-in and a first taste of the island.
Today we explore the rich Islamic culture of Lombok, visiting several mosques in the centre of the island. Afterwards, we walk through Pringgasela Village, a traditional weaving village where mothers and young women operate wooden looms in front of their houses – their masterfully woven fabrics are a living craft with centuries-old roots.
A relaxed morning to enjoy the resort and beach. In the afternoon we visit the impressive Nurul Bilad Mosque, located in the KEK Mandalika Resort area. This modern mosque – built on an 8-hectare plot, inspired by the ancient Bayan Beleq style – is both a religious and architectural highlight of Lombok.
Today we drive through Lombok's coastal landscape towards Senggigi. Along the way we stop at Hubbul Watan Mosque for Friday prayers. We then dive into local life with the Bonjeruk Village eco-tour: welcomed by the village, cycling through rice fields, enjoying a traditional lunch and finishing with a cooking demonstration by the village women.
After breakfast we drive north to Lombok for the Senaru Panorama Walk, led by local women guides. The trail winds through bamboo groves, rice terraces and rainforest to the majestic Sindang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls. Before the walk, we visit Bayan Beleq Mosque – the oldest mosque in Lombok and a national monument full of history.
Transfer from Senggigi to Bangsal harbour, then a wooden boat to paradisiacal Gili Trawangan. On the island we arrive by cidomo (horse cart) for the luggage – motorised vehicles are not allowed on the Gilis. A true breath of fresh air! Check-in, beach, and a first evening on this magical island.
Today we board a private boat for a snorkelling trip around all three Gili islands: Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. We swim among hundreds of colourful fish and stunning coral. A delicious lunch is served on board. After the tour, return to the hotel for a free evening.
By fast boat from Gili Trawangan to Padangbai harbour in Bali. After arrival, we drive through the countryside to Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali. Check-in and the rest of the evening free to soak up the atmosphere – from art galleries to evening dance performances.
A full day of Balinese heritage. We start at Tirta Empul, a sacred temple complex with purification pools fed by a holy mountain spring. Next, Gunung Kawi Temple – Bali's own Valley of the Kings, with ten royal memorial shrines carved into the riverbank. After lunch, a walk through Ubud Monkey Forest, home to around 340 long-tailed macaques in a lush jungle setting.
After breakfast, transfer to Sanur, a quiet seaside town on Bali's east coast. Sanur is the perfect finale: calmer than Kuta, with a beautiful beach promenade, local art and a pleasant atmosphere. Check-in and a free afternoon.
A free day at leisure. Rent a bicycle and explore the scenic beach path past colourful jukung fishing boats and local warungs. Or simply relax on the beach. The ideal day to let memories sink in before the journey home.
After breakfast, check out and transfer to Ngurah Rai International Airport for your flight home. Until next time, Indonesia – and see you on the next Mosaic Travels adventure!
